Projection mapping, also known as video mapping, uses 3D technology to overlap video onto any physical surface. The projection mapping process turns any three-dimensional objects into interactive displays.

People use projection mapping to showcase creativity and tell stories that grab attention. In marketing, projection mapping is an excellent way to create an immersive customer experience that;

  • Increases brand awareness
  • Build a lasting impression
  • Improve return on investment (ROI)
  • Engages the target audience

What Software is Used in Projection Mapping?

POGUMAX projection mapping software mimics the natural environment by mapping three-dimension objects onto physical surfaces. The software interacts with a projector to fit any created image onto the object’s surface.

Using such specialized projection mapping software, you can combine large-scale arrays of powerful projectors with single images in a method known as stacking to produce brighter projections that maintain a seamless look.

Steps to Projection Mapping

  • Laser scan of the physical surface

Projection mapping takes the shape and contours of the physical surface it’s mapped onto. Use a laser scan to create a 3D map of your projection surface.

It’s advisable to scan the surface in advance ( 1 to 2 months prior ) before the actual projection mapping event. You can hire an AV company specialized in professional scanning to offer this service and deliver a 3D model.

  • Apply audience perspective

From what angle will the audience view the projection? You can factor the audience’s perspective by converting the digital architecture drawing of the projection surface into a design for easy audience point-of-view identification.

  • Create projection mapping content

Projection mapping content might include animations, video footage, or a combination. The final scope is formatted into movie video files, then sent to the projection mapping specialist.

  • Preview the projection

This stage determines how the content reads when executed on the building topography.

  • Adjust for the natural environment

The projectors used in projection mapping should align and marry the real object is mapped on. Projection mapping specialists can adjust to give seamless edges between images from different projectors.

Different Types of Projection Mapping Projects

According to Panasonic, projection mapping projects are categorized into three – based on how the design of the projection system is affected by the surface object it’s mapped on.

Curvilinear shape

This one is bounded by a curve line, either concave or convex. It may require multiple projectors depending on the aspect ratio.

Beyond traditional aspect ratio

A screen surface, usually planar, does not correspond to standard screen aspect ratios. Although it’s not a projection mapping in the technical sense since the image doesn’t need it,” this image configuration may require multiple projectors and edge blending to address appropriately.

Defined by object

The features of the surface object influence the projection mapping. This would include advanced geometry correction, arcs, or ‘multiple planes.’ Example objects with unusual shapes might be monuments, landmarks, or cars.

Factors for Selecting a Mapping Projector

Colors

The projector and the media server you choose have to support the colors used to design the mapping projection content. Projectors with a wide color range give you brighter ambient light. Also, it’s essential to factor in the background color of the surface object on which mapping projection will occur.

Contrast ratio

The contrast ratio is the measure between the maximum and minimum brightness. A projector with a high contrast ratio is likely to perform better than one with a lower ratio considering all relevant aspects.

Resolution

Projection mapping resolution is dependent on the content type. For instance, video content that offers a captivating experience may not consider a higher resolution to deliver, while image content may require 4K resolution to capture the audience’s attention.

Brightness

There are several factors to consider when determining the brightness of a 3D projection mapping.

  • If you are streaming the mapping projection to an online audience, you may require high brightness so that they record the mapping with their smartphones if they want.
  • Projection surface materials like glass or fabric may decrease brightness.

Use Cases of Projection Mapping

Projection mapping technology is used across different industries to engage and create captivating experiences for customers. For instance, Bureau Pogumax brings famous paints to life and creates exclusive decorations for customer events.

Some industry use cases for projection mapping include;

  • Retail

Retail branding is tapping into projection mapping to offer an immersive customer experience. Projecting videos and images onto 3D surfaces by brands aims to drive consumer engagement, generating sales.

A great example is the Nike studio displays in Niketown London that show impressive consumer engagement.

  • Concerts and Events

Projection mapping technology is used in outdoor and indoor events to create memorable experiences. With software like POGUMAX Designer, you can map a breath-taking projection in your living room.

Also, with a virtual environment – sensory room equipment is used to educate, develop, relax, and entertain children of different ages; you can create events that kids would love and experience.

  • Healthcare

Medical students are learning with ease using 3D projections of human anatomy. Also, operating rooms use mapping projection to help surgeons save human lives.

Is Projection Mapping Augmented Reality?

Three-dimension projection mapping is a form of augmented spatial reality. You can use multiple projectors to illuminate different sides of the object.
