How technology is helping people with hearing problems

Technology is advancing at a rapid rate and infiltrates nearly every part of our lives. Technology can streamline many processes and make our day-to-day activities much quicker – whether it’s holding a business conference over video call or ordering groceries online.

Hearing aids are no exception, and various forms of technology have been used to improve these devices. If you have been struggling to hear parts of conversations or certain sounds recently, book a hearing test soon.

Most hearing aids are made up of four basic parts: a processor, receiver, microphone, and power source. The power source fuels the system, the microphone detects sound, the processor amplifies the sound and delivers it to the receiver, which sends it to the ear canal. Simple enough, right?

There are now more advanced versions of hearing aids that can improve your hearing and quality of life – here are a few examples.

Table of Contents

  • Bluetooth Compatibility
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Apps
  • Tinnitus Masking Features

Bluetooth Compatibility

You can now connect your hearing aid to your phone through a Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth can improve the signal to noise balance and remove any feedback from the microphone. You are less likely to hear sound interference and more likely to receive a clear and enhanced sound.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence refers to a machine that can simulate human intelligence and make decisions by following some rules. If you are after a more premium model, your hearing aid may come with AI technology built into it. AI can help tailor your hearing aid to specific sound environments by automatically changing the volume and programme settings. This technology can replicate how your brain would respond to sound if your hearing was in optimal condition.

The best hearing aids adapt to different environments, and your individual hearing needs automatically. While you might not need all the features included in premium hearing aids, they can come in handy. For example, if you rarely find yourself in crowded places and stick to quiet areas – you might not need AI technology in your hearing aid. You need to find the best hearing aid for your lifestyle and hearing impairment.

Apps

You can connect your hearing aid to an app on your phone. Instead of having AI automatically adjust the settings of your device, you can do it yourself. Some apps can also direct your calls to your hearing aids so you can hear people on the phone better – genius! You can also contact your hearing specialist from the app and monitor the battery life.

Apps can also act as assistive listening devices by translating speech into text for you to read instead.

Tinnitus Masking Features

Smart hearing aids can come with tinnitus masking features. The hearing aid will emit a sound that masks the tinnitus or ringing noise in your ear.

Talk to your hearing specialist to find the best hearing aid for you.
