Vacation days should be spent completely unplugged from the office, with friends, family, or even solo. They’re meant to recharge, solely for you. But what if there’s a way to fit more travel and experience new cultures into your life without having to use those few precious vacation days that you’re given?

That’s where a workation comes in. A workation can be any length of time, agreed upon between you and your superior, where you are still working full time but from a completely new location.

Tips For Speaking to Your Boss About Your Workation

Work-life balance is something we all strive for, each side temporarily taking the lead. It’s an important consideration and as that line has blurred more and more in the last couple of years, taking back control and making it work for you is more important than ever.

Businesses are struggling to provide incentives and benefits that keep employees engaged and increase employee morale so finding new creative ideas is key. Suggesting a workation policy could be the answer your employer is looking for.

Empowering employees to switch up their location and get away from their cubicle can lead to higher job satisfaction, increase the desire for collaboration, lower stress levels and increase creativity. It can also bring about the ability to see things from new perspectives and increase problem-solving capacity.

Increasing employee retention is good for everyone.

And if listing off those reasons doesn’t seal the deal with your boss, let them know that on average, companies can save $11,000 per remote employee per year!

Workation Destinations

The next step, once you’ve received the green light to start planning your workation, is to decide on a location.

There are a few key items to keep in mind when you’re deciding on a location:

  1. What is your budget?
  2. What is the cost of living for the locations you’re considering?
  3. Are there a lot of coworking spaces or cafes?
  4. What is the culture like?
  5. Availability of short-term rentals
  6. Wifi

Take some time to consider what you need most. Are you hoping to get out of the hustle and bustle of city life to experience the slow-moving peace of the country? Or maybe suburban life has been the same day in and day out for you and you’re looking for the busy downtown color and lights. Once you know what you’re looking for, you can narrow down your options.

Next Vacay has also done a lot of the leg work for you and taken into account all the factors you need to consider and put together this great list of the best workation destinations. It takes all the guesswork out of things for you!

Challenges To Consider

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Have a plan for any medication you may need to take with you, especially if it needs special care or refrigeration, like insulin. Have a plan for how to get things refilled ahead of time.
  • Check to make sure your insurance will cover your destination and length of travel. If it doesn’t, there are plenty of short-term insurance options to check out. It’s one of those things you never think you need until you really do need it.
  • Get familiar with how the pandemic may have changed the area you are traveling to and any restrictions you may need to adhere to while you’re there.
  • Time Zone! Keeping in contact with coworkers will be important so make sure you know what time zone you’ll be in and schedule meetings accordingly.
